The note discusses the background of oral healthcare in the developing world and establishes the importance of oral health and hygiene by citing research that reveals its links with other serious health conditions. The paper also explains the methodology adopted and the protocal followed for the study and includes details of the CHW training curriculum along with the schedule for training and the envisaged timeline of the Oral Hygiene Study.
Download (PDF)The Nala Oli Volunteer Handbook was developed as a basic health guide for ICPTH’s community health workers, called Nala Oli Volunteers (NOVs). The Handbook presents the role of the NOV in ICPTH’s programs, and provides an overview of basic health information, such as nutrition and reproductive health, and community health issues such as water and sanitation.
Download (PDF)This paper introduces the proposed strategy of Healthcare Solutions Vertical at ICTPH. The note enumerates the goals and the conceived solutions in the areas of health financing and point-of-care diagnostics. It also highlights impact assessment of health systems along with design of such health systems, as another vital area of interest for Healthcare solutions.
Download (PDF)This proposal expounds the three pronged strategy of ICTPH in providing enhanced accessibility to healthcare in rural India. Further the note highlights the proposed 5 acre ICTPH campus at the ICICI Knowledge Park, Hyderabad in aiding both the core functions and the envisaged subsidiaries of ICTPH as Centre of Excellence, Design Innovation Lab, and PCD Fund etc.
Download (PDF)This note introduces the concept of Point of care testing. An overview of the global market of POC diagnostics is presented, to emphasise the growing need and use of POC testing. The author examines the need for POC diagnostics based on the statistical information available on the 5 major diseases – Malaria, Tuberculosis, Diabetes, Maternal and Child health and Diarrhoeal diseases along with the available POC tests for each.
Download (PDF)This project aims to launch a nurse practitioner based comprehensive fixed price health care system, in the Tanjore district of Tamil Nadu. The note discusses the background and current scenario of healthcare in India. Further it explains the reasons for the requirement of such a venture. A brief outline of the venture, including the features, roles of different partners’ envisaged and future evolution has been provided in the note.
Download (PDF)Poster presentation accepted at the Gephardt Institute of Public service for the poster on Faces of Hope. The objective of this mapping exercise is to look at current access within the ICTPH Health Systems Pilot at Karambayam. Two buffers (500m and 1000m) have been created around the health workers. Another buffer around the health center was created to look at access to the primary care clinic from within the hamlets.
Download (PDF)This paper explore the optimal drug supply chain distribution design for ICTPH’s implementation partner SughaVazhvu Healthcare .
Download (PDF)This paper details Indian rural diabetes prevalence estimation using random plasma glucose and body mass index.
Download (PDF)Micronutrient deficiencies, particularly iron deficiency, have a direct impact on the nutritional status of children and are the leading cause of anaemia in non-malarial regions. The Indian National Health and Family Survey-3 conducted in 2005-2006, found that anemia among children less than three years of age is extremely widespread. This study will evaluate the feasibility of combining social marketing with the activities of a local health centres and community health workers to promote the sale and use of Sprinkles micronutrient powder in rural Tamil Nadu and its effectiveness on reducing the levels of anaemia among children aged 6-24 months.
Download (PDF)Non-communicable and chronic diseases are the leading causes of death in this part of rural India. The observed pattern of death is unlikely to be unique to these villages and provides new insight into the rapid progression of epidemiological transition in rural India. Health statistics are necessary inputs in planning appropriate health interventions. This concept note focuses on evaluation of different data collection methods and implication of Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) technology for household data collection.
Download (PDF)Rosemary Stafford documents her evaluation of the ICTPH Health Extension Worker Program in Karambayam.
Download (PDF)This paper outlines the four phase (fifteen – day) training program, which was scheduled for the Guides within a week of their selection based on the ICTPH Eight step selection process. The overall objective of the training was to equip the Guides with the knowledge and skills to perform their day-to-day role in their respective hamlets. The training techniques incorporated principles of adult learning and adopted a problem solving approach to stimulate active participation from Guides to ensure that learning objectives of each phase were met, adding to the existing experiences and knowledge of the Guides.
Download (PDF)Selecting a health worker involves many steps. The profile of the health worker must be established, criteria must be framed, candidates identified and a final selection made. The paper is an attempt to assist interviewers to make careful selection of health workers with the support of structured tools such as the application form, written test paper, interview guide and interview form. While exploring the need to establish these tools, an EIGHT STEP process has been created providing a framework for careful and systematic selection. A case study highlighting the implementation of the tools and process is included for review.
