Life of a SughaVazhvu Guide

By Sabyasachi Das, Research Associate – ICTPH

The above video gives a snap-shot of how a Population Based Individual Screening Protocol (PISP) is conducted in the field by the SughaVazhu Guides (SVGs), and also throws some light on the life of an SVG.

Varalakshmi, shown in the video, is one among 12 such Guides who are responsible for the well being of citizens of the Karambayam block – the place she belongs to. She has received basic training on screening Primary Health parameters like Blood Pressure, Body Mass Index, Visual Acuity, Nicotine and Alcohol scoring and captures all this information systematically in an Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheet. This is then digitised and made available to a broad group of people for designing health interventions.

The skills and knowledge of the SVGs are enhanced through weekly training sessions – a process that equips them to monitor their community’s health. As early adopters of good health practices, they also become role models for their communities.
